BP Employees,

Interest rates used to calculate your BP RAP have continued to move higher in recent months, and we are not expecting a meaningful decline anytime soon. As shown in this month’s chart, our forecasts suggest rates could move a little higher into early 2027 before gradually easing.

Much of this is being driven by an economy that continues to perform well. The labor market remains relatively steady, wages continue to increase, and GDP continues to show solid economic growth. Over the past year, wage growth has been close to inflation, although rising gasoline prices have recently pushed inflation slightly higher. Overall, these conditions suggest the economy remains on solid footing, even as inflation continues to be a concern.

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates in September but elected to leave them unchanged at its October meeting. Meanwhile, longer-term bond yields have moved noticeably higher over the past several months, reflecting expectations for continued economic growth and persistent inflation. Given these conditions, we do not anticipate a significant decline in interest rates in the near future.

Looking ahead, the upcoming midterm elections could also have implications for financial markets. Current expectations suggest we could see a shift in control of Congress, although neither party is expected to gain enough seats to override a presidential veto. This would likely result in a divided government for the next two years. Historically, the stock market has often performed quite well following midterm elections, including periods of divided government. While there are no guarantees, this could provide a favorable backdrop for stocks as we move into 2027.

For BP employees approaching retirement, the continued movement in interest rates makes understanding your pension options especially important. Higher interest rates generally reduce lump-sum pension values, but the impact depends on your age, Benefit Commencement Date, and which interest rates apply to your calculation. Choosing the right month to begin your benefits can make a substantial difference in the amount you ultimately receive.

If retirement is on your radar, we encourage you to review your options before making a decision. BP filing deadlines often arrive sooner than expected, and understanding how changing interest rates affect your pension can help you make a more informed decision.

At Capstone RIA, we help BP employees understand how interest rates can impact pension decisions and broader retirement planning strategies. If you would like help reviewing your situation, feel free to reach out to us at info@CapstoneRIA.com or call us at 877-739-6007.
