BP Employees,

Capstone RIA RAP/Pension Interest Rate chart showing six retirement periods and rates (Treasury and corporate) for 2026.Interest rates used to calculate your BP RAP came in mostly in line with our expectation of “little to no change” last month. This month, however, we are anticipating a noticeable increase in rates across all segments.

While higher rates can result in lower pension lump-sum values, this should not be alarming. BP places caps on the interest rates used to calculate pension benefits, which helps limit the impact of rising rates. However, it does make the timing of your pension election increasingly important. How and when you elect to receive your pension benefits can have a meaningful impact on the amount you ultimately receive.

The biggest issue affecting interest rates right now continues to be inflation. As we have discussed over the past several months, oil prices moved sharply higher earlier this spring as tensions with Iran escalated. Higher energy prices can keep inflation elevated and make it more difficult for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates.

More recently, oil prices had fallen considerably, with WTI crude dropping to around $68 from roughly $113 in early April. That was a positive development for inflation. However, renewed tensions with Iran have once again put upward pressure on oil prices and increased concerns that inflation could remain higher for longer.

For BP employees approaching retirement, the main takeaway is that pension timing is becoming more important. BP’s interest rate caps provide some protection when rates rise, but there can still be a meaningful difference between Benefit Commencement Dates.

If retirement is on your radar, we encourage you to review your options before making an election. BP filing deadlines arrive sooner than many people expect, and understanding how the timing of your pension works can help you make a more informed decision.
